St Helena Government’s (SHG) new Business Manager, Caesar Bond Nayoto, took on his new role in the Education & Employment Directorate on Tuesday, 11 June 2019.

Caesar has been appointed on a local contract and his main duties will include overseeing and leading the business operations of the Directorate with overall responsibility for Administration, Finance, HR and Procurement sections.

Caesar said:

“When I got here, I was amazed by the friendly and courteous gestures of the local people and thought to myself; if all people around the world were like the Saints that would be a great leap towards making the world a better and safer place to live in.”

Director of Education & Employment, Wendy Benjamin, added:

“I am really pleased to welcome Caesar as part of our team in Education. There is much for him to learn in relation to the workings of SHG and the Directorate but I am confident that he will rise to these challenges. I wish Caesar well in his new role and I hope that he will enjoy working with us.”

Caesar has management and technical qualifications in Electronics and Electrical Engineering and 13 years management experience. He holds a postgraduate qualification in Financial Management from the University of Gloucestershire and is currently doing a dissertation for a Master of Business Administration with the same university.

Caesar is a level one cricket coach and has held different portfolios within Zimbabwe Cricket in Development, Cricket Operations and as the Zimbabwe National Cricket Team Manager to the 2014 ICC T20 World Cup. He is ready to volunteer his services to coaching children during his spare time.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) is recognised every year on 15 June. WEAAD is an opportunity for communities around the world to promote a better understanding and raise awareness of abuse and neglect of older persons. This year’s theme is ‘Lifting Up Voices’ and the colour for the day is ‘purple’.

The Children & Adults Social Care Directorate is leading on a number of initiatives to give service users, residents and tenants an active voice, promote their safety and wellbeing, and improve their life opportunities. These initiatives are evolving and include: a regular health MOT in partnership with the Health Directorate and coordinated by Community & Residential Disability Manager, Nicky Adams, a resident-led committee for residents of the Princess Royal Community Care Centre (CCC), and a befriending service across the Directorate.

Quality Assurance & Policy Lead, Gavin (Jack) Thomas, said:

“For many people who live alone or without social companionship, life can be lonely and isolating, and if they have restricted mobility, additional needs or suffering from long-term illnesses, all this can lead to increased illness, loneliness and isolation.

“One way for an older person, someone with additional needs or someone with restricted mobility to have improved life is to meet regularly with a caring visitor with whom to chat, have a drink, a meal, attend places of worship, go shopping, or visit a place of interest.

“To celebrate WEAAD 2019, we want to hear from anyone interested in becoming a befriender of the Children & Adults Social Care Directorate. Anyone wishing to find out more about volunteering for this personally rewarding role, should contact myself or Assistant Director, Victoria Kellett, at Brick House on telephone number 22713.

“The resident-led committee is very much in its infancy but we have a promising chairperson who is set to be the ideal advocate and ambassador on behalf of the residents of the CCC. The committee will help us promote and reflect on equality in how we provide care and support. As the committee evolves, it will add value and a clear focus on decision making and inclusion.”

Together we can promote the dignity, respect and safety of our older citizens. St Helena Police are currently investigating the theft of a number of plants stolen from the Millennium Forest Nursery between 4pm on Tuesday, 11, and 8.30am on Wednesday, 12 June 2019.

Conservation Projects Officer, Martina Peters, said:

“These plants have taken much valuable time to grow and be cared for, in order to become established. Some of the plants taken were intended for sale, so that profits from sales will be put back into undertaking conservation works at the Millennium Forest. This goes towards staff salaries, transport costs, material and equipment etc.

“Also stolen were a number of Ebony plants, the Ebony is endemic to St Helena Island and protected under the Environmental Protection Ordinance 2016 for which the maximum penalty is a fine of £50,000 or imprisonment for 12 months or both.”

St Helena Government (SHG) is aware of an incident in Pretoria today where three St Helenians accompanying medical referral patients were held at gunpoint while out shopping. The three persons were not harmed but some of their belongings were stolen. The persons are safe. They are receiving pastoral support and assistance from MSO and the South African Police are investigating the incident.

The Health Directorate has contacted the families of those affected to make them aware of events.

SHG recognises that people will be concerned following the news of this incident. SHG is liaising with the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) in Pretoria for further security advice to help St Helenians stay safe whilst abroad.

This is an unfortunate incident which could have happened anywhere in the world. Whilst Pretoria is relatively safe and low-crime by South African standards, sadly criminals can operate anywhere at any time. Patients, their families and all persons overseas are reminded to be extra vigilant particularly in areas where recent crimes have taken place. Keep large amounts of money, expensive jewellery, cameras and phones out of sight and only take with you what you need for the day. Where possible secure your valuables in your hotel room.

Most visits to South Africa are trouble-free, but sensible precautions should be taken to protect your safety.

The St Helena Community College (SHCC) will host their Learning Opportunities Fair at the College on Wednesday, 26 June 2019, from 10am to 6pm.

The aim of the fair is to promote training opportunities which are available through the SHCC. The event will provide an opportunity to network and share experiences and will promote the importance of continuous education in developing the Island.

A ‘flash sale’ on a limited number of seats to St Helena in July, August and September 2019 will go on sale from tomorrow, Friday 14 June 2019. Airlink’s Chief Revenue Officer, Chris Hoare, and Marketing & Sales Manager, Karin Murray, visited St Helena between Saturday, 8, and Sunday, 9 June 2019, for the Air Service Agreement Quarterly Review meeting.

Discussions were held with representatives from the St Helena Government (SHG), Enterprise St Helena (ESH) and Legislative Council. Representatives from the Department for International Development (DFID) joined via telephone link.

Topics included planned marketing activities for 2019 and 2020, discussions around ongoing operations and various operational matters, future plans for the air service, and planning for flights over the coming years, particularly the forthcoming Cape Town flights which are scheduled for December 2019 to February 2020.

Acting Airport Contracts Manager, James Kellett, said:

“Whilst we are in regular dialogue with air service stakeholders, it is very helpful to have face-to-face conversations.  As such we had a useful and wide ranging meeting on a number of topics relating to the air service, discussing the opportunities and challenges associated with operating an air service to St Helena and Ascension.”

SHG, Airlink, ESH and DFID will continue to meet on a regular basis to monitor the performance of the air service, plan for future changes, and to discuss operational matters as they arise.

• Children & Adults Social Care Directorate holds second round of ‘Day-Care Health Check’, in partnership with the Health Directorate
• ‘Day-Care Health Check’ provides disabled adult clients with regular access to health checks, health information and future health plans
• 26 clients from the community and residential homes accessed the service on 23 May 2019

In a second round of ‘Day Care Health Check’, 26 clients from the Island community and residential homes were able to access health checks, health information and future health plans during an all-day event at Barnview. Attendees were able to check their height, weight, blood pressure, BMI and blood sugar levels as well as engage in fun day-care activities.

Primary Care & Community Nurse Practitioner, Nicola Anderson, commented:

“The Community Nurses devised a Health Questionnaire and checklist tailored to screen the participants for chronic diseases, collect baseline medical data, identify any potential health problems which may need follow-up, check medications are taken correctly and provide lifestyle advice and brief intervention.

“The Community Nurses were happy to take part in such an important and worthwhile day. This also fits in with the ‘Altogether Healthier’ goal of the Island’s 10-Year Plan.”

The Physiotherapy staff met with six patients, four of whom will require follow-up visits.

Physiotherapist, Bradley Petersen, said:

“I think it was good for us as health care professionals to go out into the community and serve the clients instead of them usually coming to us. This is even more important considering that most of the clients seen that day had some impairment, therefore making them coming out to an appointment very difficult. I understand that this usually requires a bit of admin, getting suitable vehicles for transport or just getting family members or carers involved. This was the outcome of the day as everyone congregated at the same place and was able to see multiple members of the Health Directorate.”

The Dental staff saw 11 patients on the day all of whom required follow-up visits at the Dental Clinic.

Dental Officer, Heather Cowdry, said:

“For us this session was a way of reaching clients who would not ordinarily choose to attend the Dental Clinic, often due to the difficulties they have in doing so, and/or a lack of perceived need for dental care. Having a day dedicated to providing a range of services and screenings enables these clients to be assessed by multiple teams with the minimal disruption and difficulty and by doing so enables future care and treatment needs to be planned in an appropriate manner.”

To date, five clients have already been seen and their treatment completed, two clients are ongoing and the remaining are scheduled to be seen in the next couple of weeks to fit around their schedule.

Community & Residential Disability Manager, Nicolene Adams, concluded:

“By organising and investing in these bi-monthly health checks and health action plans we aim to build relationships of trust with our disabled community and residential clients and their families. We are then able to identify health problems in the early stages by allowing easier access to health services and providing maximum support.

“The provision of the service is a good example of directorates working together to improve the outcomes for the residents of St Helena. In an NHS report written by Dr Matt Hoghton RCGP Medical Director, he states the following: ‘No person can change the world but together we can change the world of one person’.

“I wish to sincerely thank Day Care Officers, Carers, Community Nurses, the Physiotherapy staff , Occupational Therapy staff and Dental Staff who are working together to provide an invaluable service to promote the wellbeing of vulnerable adults in the St Helena community.”
