  • Automated External Defibrillators

Automated External Defibrillators (AED) have been deployed at a number of key locations around the Island as part of the Community AED Project.

What is an AED, and when and how are they used?

Defibrillators are devices that send a safe electric shock to the heart to restore a normal heartbeat when someone is not conscious and not breathing (i.e. they are in cardiac arrest).

A defibrillator may also be referred to as a DEFIB, an AED or a PAD (Public Access Defibrillator). Statistics show that if a defibrillator is used on a patient within the first few minutes of cardiac arrest, they have a 60-70% chance of making a full recovery.

The type of AEDs being deployed are designed so that they can be used by anyone, without specialist training. Once turned on they will instruct the user through voice commands on exactly how to use the device safely, for both the patient and the operator.

These particular AEDs will only deliver a lifesaving shock to the patient if it is needed. They can tell if this is the case and will talk the user through what to do, meaning people can use the AEDs with confidence in an emergency situation.

The AEDs will be clearly signposted and will be contained in a bright yellow box which looks similar to the below image.

If you require access to an AED, the code to the cabinet can be requested from the Emergency Control Centre when dialling 999.

    Where are the AED located?

AEDs have now been placed in the following locations:

    DistrictLocation
Half Tree HollowHalf Tree Hollow Clinic (outside of main entrance)
St Paul’sThe Pavilion Area at Francis Plain
    LevelwoodSilver Hill Shop

    Sandy BayBamboo Hedge Shop
Rupert’sSea Rescue Building (outside the main entrance)
    LongwoodThe Police Post

A short instructional video on what AEDs are, when and how to use them, and where they are located around the Island can be found online at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Z5M08-wyuI.

    Notes to Editor:

The funding for this Project has been provided by Disaster Management UK, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), Airlink, The Royal St Helena Police Service, and the Health and Social Care Portfolio.

  • Appeal To Return Wheelchairs

The Occupational Therapy Service is appealing for any wheelchairs currently on loan to be returned if they are not being used. This applies to any wheelchairs loaned out for either at home or in residential care.

The Occupational Therapy Service has very few wheelchairs at the moment and are struggling to be able to provide them to people in need.

Wheelchairs should only be issued to people that need to constantly use them to be able to get around safely. Ensuring that the people that need a wheelchair can access and use one as quickly as possible prevents falls and injuries, and significantly improves their quality of life.

If you have a wheelchair that is not being used, or you are only using it occasionally, such as when you go into town for example, please return it.

If you need to loan a wheelchair for a short time, such as following an operation or for a visiting relative or friend with mobility issues, then please contact the Occupational Therapy Service. A short term loan wheelchair can then be provided. Please ensure that the wheelchair is returned when it is no longer required so that it can be available for when someone else really needs it.

Wheelchairs can also be loaned for short term use in and around Jamestown. This is free of charge, and can be obtained from the Tourist Information Centre / Arts and Crafts in the Canister, Jamestown.

Please return wheelchairs directly to the Occupational Therapy Service at St Johns Villa in Jamestown, or to the Hospital reception desk. Please let the receptionist know that you are leaving the wheelchair for the Occupational Therapy Service.

If you are unable to return the wheelchair in person, please get in touch with the Occupational Therapy Service by telephone through 22500 (extension 2055). We will then arrange to collect the chair from you.

If you require further information, please contact Adele, Carolyn or Nina at the Occupational Therapy Service by telephone on 22500 (extension 2055) or via email through: adele.mcmichael@sainthelena.gov.sh.

  • HM Customs Prepayment Facility

HM Customs would like to remind the public that prepayment of duties on imported goods can be made in advance of the collection of goods.

To do so you will need to obtain your waybill from your consolidator (e.g. Richard James International, MS Atlantic Ltd, Zedcore, Table Bay Marine, or Umugusi etc) and email it and any invoices associated with it to: customs.enquiries@sainthelena.gov.sh.

This email can also be used for customer enquiries or any advice regarding customs.

You will receive an Assessment Notice in reply, advising you of the amount of customs duty owed.

Before the collection of goods, payment can be made at the HM Customs Office at Jamestown Wharf or the Post and Customer Services Centre in Jamestown, or either online or in person via the Bank of St Helena (BOSH).

If paying in person you will need to present the Assessment Notice. If paying via BOSH you will need to use the Assessment Notice number as the payment reference.

If payment is made through the Post and Customer Services Centre or BOSH then confirmation of payment should be sent emailed to HM Customs via: customs.enquiries@sainthelena.gov.sh. Confirmation can also be given by telephone on 22287.

Proof of payment is required before the release of any goods.

When payment is made in advance customers are not required to queue at HM Customs after collecting their goods. This allows for a smoother and faster process when releasing goods, and reduces the demand on HM Custom’s services on cargo days.

The public are encouraged to make use of this service, and get in touch with HM Customs for more information if required.
