  • New Years Honours 2024

HE Governor Nigel Phillips CBE is pleased to announce the following New Year 2024 Honours Award as endorsed by His Majesty The King, and to be published in the Overseas and International Honours list on Saturday 30 December 2023:

    • A British Empire Medal (BEM) to Dr Jonathan Hollins, Veterinary Surgeon (retired), for services to veterinary science and animals on St Helena.

Dr Hollins worked on St Helena as a full time Senior Veterinary Officer for more than nine years up until his retirement in February 2022. Dr Hollins delivered a professional service to the Veterinary and Agricultural section of the Environmental, Natural Resources & Planning (ENRP) Directorate, providing care to a wide range of animals from domestic pets and livestock to bees and Jonathan the 191-year-old tortoise and world’s oldest living land animal.
Dr Hollins contributed to a number of reforms and developments which included training and advising local paravets, pet owners and agricultural producers, helping to redraft a range of animal related legislation, establishing biosecurity protocols for the importation of pets and livestock via sea and air freight, researching and identifying prevalent veterinary conditions for the creation of a reference database, and ensuring that veterinary services remained affordable to the local community.
Once retired, Dr Hollins continued to provide an emergency veterinary service during the period the island was without a qualified vet. Dr Hollins was highly valued, trusted and appreciated by the local community for his skill, knowledge and professionalism.
In addition to providing a veterinary service, Dr Hollins voluntarily served on a number of local charitable committees on St Helena. He was also instrumental in promoting St Helena as a tourism destination through a book publication and articles in international media, including BBC radio, on his time as a vet on St Helena.
    Dr Hollins commented:

‘It is truly a great honour and privilege to receive this award for my work on the Island of St Helena. But just as the hands of a clock cannot tell the time without the wheels and cogs that turn them, I would have struggled to achieve what I believe we have achieved without the unstinting loyalty of the veterinary team and the enabling attitudes of my managers, to all of whom I am deeply indebted. My thanks also go out to the Saints, as I consider myself extremely fortunate to have plied my profession on such a friendly and fascinating island.’

  • Appeal To Return Wheelchairs

The Occupational Therapy Service is appealing for any wheelchairs currently on loan to be returned if they are not being used. This applies to any wheelchairs loaned out for either at home or in residential care.

The Occupational Therapy Service has very few wheelchairs at the moment and are struggling to be able to provide them to people in need.

Wheelchairs should only be issued to people that need to constantly use them to be able to get around safely. Ensuring that the people that need a wheelchair can access and use one as quickly as possible prevents falls and injuries, and significantly improves their quality of life.

If you have a wheelchair that is not being used, or you are only using it occasionally, such as when you go into town for example, please return it.

If you need to loan a wheelchair for a short time, such as following an operation or for a visiting relative or friend with mobility issues, then please contact the Occupational Therapy Service. A short term loan wheelchair can then be provided. Please ensure that the wheelchair is returned when it is no longer required so that it can be available for when someone else really needs it.

Wheelchairs can also be loaned for short term use in and around Jamestown. This is free of charge, and can be obtained from the Tourist Information Centre / Arts and Crafts in the Canister, Jamestown.

Please return wheelchairs directly to the Occupational Therapy Service at St Johns Villa in Jamestown, or to the Hospital reception desk. Please let the receptionist know that you are leaving the wheelchair for the Occupational Therapy Service.

If you are unable to return the wheelchair in person, please get in touch with the Occupational Therapy Service by telephone through 22500 (extension 2055). We will then arrange to collect the chair from you.

If you require further information, please contact Adele, Carolyn or Nina at the Occupational Therapy Service by telephone on 22500 (extension 2055) or via email through: adele.mcmichael@sainthelena.gov.sh.

  • HM Customs Prepayment Facility

HM Customs would like to remind the public that prepayment of duties on imported goods can be made in advance of the collection of goods.

To do so you will need to obtain your waybill from your consolidator (e.g. Richard James International, MS Atlantic Ltd, Zedcore, Table Bay Marine, or Umugusi etc) and email it and any invoices associated with it to: customs.enquiries@sainthelena.gov.sh.

This email can also be used for customer enquiries or any advice regarding customs.

You will receive an Assessment Notice in reply, advising you of the amount of customs duty owed.

Before the collection of goods, payment can be made at the HM Customs Office at Jamestown Wharf or the Post and Customer Services Centre in Jamestown, or either online or in person via the Bank of St Helena (BOSH).

If paying in person you will need to present the Assessment Notice. If paying via BOSH you will need to use the Assessment Notice number as the payment reference.

If payment is made through the Post and Customer Services Centre or BOSH then confirmation of payment should be sent emailed to HM Customs via: customs.enquiries@sainthelena.gov.sh. Confirmation can also be given by telephone on 22287.

Proof of payment is required before the release of any goods.

When payment is made in advance customers are not required to queue at HM Customs after collecting their goods. This allows for a smoother and faster process when releasing goods, and reduces the demand on HM Custom’s services on cargo days.

The public are encouraged to make use of this service, and get in touch with HM Customs for more information if required.
