  • Sounding Of Emergency Warning System On Tuesday 02 May

Saint Helena Government would like to apologise for the disruption caused by yesterday’s sounding of the public warning system in Jamestown.

Although it was announced on 24 April 2023 that testing of the system would be taking place on the first Tuesday of each month, the sounding of the system yesterday was more substantial and sustained than would ordinarily be the case. This is because it was related to final commissioning and testing works, prior to the system going live.

This was scheduled to be announced the day before to provide additional notice to the public, but due to an administrative issue, the public announcement was unfortunately not released in time.

Whilst it will be essential to conduct regular future tests to ensure the system is operational when needed, these will only be very brief soundings once a month.

The public warning system forms a key part of the Island’s emergency preparedness and response measures, and further guidance will be issued in due course. This will include how the system will be used and what actions the public should take when they hear the system.

We thank the public for their support and understanding.

This is a meeting notification only and the meeting will not be open to members of the public.

The Highways Authority has given permission for the road below the Baptist chapel in lower Sandy Bay to be closed to vehicular traffic and pedestrians on Wednesday 10 May 2023, from 09:30am to 2pm.

This is to enable the Rock Guards to carry out a controlled rock removal above the main road. During this closure, only emergency services will be granted access. Road closure signage will be in place during this time.

The Rock Guards would like to thank the public in advance for their understanding and cooperation.

  • Constituent Enquiries For Jamestown And Rupert’s Residents

On her appointment Minister Gillian Brooks said:

“I am honoured and pleased to have accepted this important role. I look forward to bringing my own skills and experience to delivering the important work of the Executive Council.”

“I would however like to assure the community that I will continue to work to the best of my ability to represent the interest of St Helena and its people. I trust that I will have your support in my endeavours to fulfil this important role, for which I thank you.”

  • Jacob’s Ladder Closure

The public is advised that the lower section of Jacob’s Ladder – from ‘halfway’ wall to the bottom of the Ladder – will be closed on Monday, 1 May, and Tuesday, 2 May 2023. This closure is to allow the contractor to remove the formwork used for the tunnel repair.

Access to the Ladder from the top and ‘halfway’ will remain open but users should be mindful in preventing debris falling onto the lower section of the Ladder and the footpath/road below ‘halfway’ which will be occupied/utilised by the contractor.

Whilst these works are undertaken, the Highways Authority has also given permission for the section of the road from the Pipe Store building to the Museum, including the parking space area adjacent to the Museum, to be closed on these days from 8am to 3pm. The diversion route will be through Church Lane or Shy road and appropriate signage will be in place.

For any queries, please contact the Contractor, Mr Colin Yon, on mobile number +290 61247 or Mr Chris Bargo on +290 61248.

The public are thanked in advance for their understanding and cooperation.

  • Prince Andrew School Swimming Gala 2023

Prince Andrew School will be hosting their annual Swimming Gala on Friday, 28 April 2023. All parents, carers, and members of the public are invited to attend. However, as space within the pool is limited, priority will be given to parents/carers. There is also limited seating and shade available. The Gala will start at approximately 9.30am and will end at approximately 2pm.

As this is a school event we would appreciate if all spectators could adhere to the following conditions in the interests of the safety of our students:

    • No animals will be allowed at this event
    • Only the appointed marshalls, helpers, and School Team Leaders will be allowed around the pool area
    • Only school appointed photographers will be allowed to photograph the event – no filming on mobile phones will be allowed.
    • No alcohol is allowed anywhere on the premises
    • Smoking is restricted at the pool for this event. Persons wishing to smoke must do so outside of the pool area, and away from all students
    • All litter is to be put into the bins provided.

Please note, if parents/carers wish to transport their children home after the event they are asked to ensure that they send in a note, or see a staff member on the day so that all children can be accounted for.

We look forward to your support in making this a successful day for our children.

  • Nursery Provision

The Education, Skills & Employment Portfolio offers non-compulsory Nursery Education for all children between the ages of three and four years.

The Education, Skills & Employment Portfolio will be in contact with parents/guardians of those children born on-Island and who are eligible to enter Nursery Education in the school year September 2023 – August 2024 to offer a place in Nursery Education and to give details of school placement and date of admission.

It would be appreciated if parents of children who were not born on St Helena could submit the following information in writing to the Assistant Director of Schools (see contact details below) so that an offer of placement can be made:

    1. The child’s full name and date of birth
    1. Name and address of parent/s or guardian
    1. Telephone number and email address (if applicable).

Once all required information has been received, parents/guardians will be advised of their child’s Nursery placement.

It should be noted that a child should attend school in the catchment area where he/she is resident. However, for non-compulsory schooling, exceptions will only be made for regular attendance outside the identified catchment area if numbers in the requested school are low enough to accommodate the extra intake and if there is a valid reason for this e.g. child care. Parents who would like their child to attend nursery schooling outside of their catchment area must apply in writing to the Assistant Director of Schools, stating which school they would like their child to attend and the reason for the placement outside of their catchment area. In such cases parents must be willing to take responsibility for transporting their child to and from school.

Correspondence can be sent to the Assistant Director of Schools, at the Education Learning Centre, Jamestown, or emailed to: kerry.lawrence@sainthelena.gov.sh.
