With Maundy Thursday just around the corner, many people will no doubt be preparing to spend this time fishing at various locations around the Island.
The Sea Rescue Service encourages the community to stay safe during this traditional period and to take some basic precautions to help to do so.
If planning a fishing trip, inform family members and friends of your intended location and expected time of return. If you are likely to be late returning home then please let you friends and family know as soon as possible. Similarly, if you are concerned about someone that has not checked in or returned as planned, then please get in touch with the emergency services.
Please do not fish alone. Fishing alone places you in greater danger if you find yourself in an unexpected situation and reduces your chances of being able to alert others that you need help.
When going fishing, you should also consider taking the following items with you:
VHF Radio, mobile phone or other means of communication
Life Jacket or buoyancy aid
Any prescription medication you might need
Adequate food and water
Suitable clothing for the weather conditions, and if possible some sort of Hi-Vis
First Aid Kit
Adequate lighting
Sea Rescue Service team will be patrolling the various fishing areas throughout the night. If any assistance is required, you can call for help by dialing 999 or on VHF Channel 16, which will be monitored at all times by the Emergency Services Call Centre (call sign – St Helena Radio). Failing that, the Sea Rescue Service can be signaled when passing, by flashing or waving a light at the patrolling vessel.

The Capital Programme Section will be holding a series of public information meetings during March 2023. These meetings are held quarterly to provide the public with the opportunity to hear directly about the various pieces of Economic Development Investment Programme (EDIP) work underway, and to put any questions or queries they might have to the team responsible for delivering these.
The meetings in March will include works to Rupert’s Wharf Cargo Handling Facility Development and Side Path Road and Field Road Rehabilitation.
All meetings will begin at 7pm and will take place as follows:
Last month it was confirmed that the contractor would be undertaking works to complete the remaining elements of the Side Path Road construction contract. These works are now focused on drainage below the Brow, and are progressing in the vicinity of Seales Corner Road, Harris Flats, Parish Block and the Run.
Seales Corner Road is now re-opened, but there will need to be a further closure later this month to enable final completion of the works. An announcement will be made about this in due course.
The focus of the works have now moved to the Run. In order to construct the connection from Seales Corner Road to the Run, it is necessary to close the Run to all pedestrians between Harris Flats and Connect’s offices for approximately two weeks.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused. Appropriate warning signage will be in place throughout the closure.
Radio announcements will continue to be made to update the public on progress. This will include the re-opening of the Run and the timing of the planned work between Harris Flats and Parish Block.
For further information on the site works please contact the EDIP site supervisor, Mr Chris Williams, on 67424.
