  • Health Services to commence Bowel Cancer Screening Programme

Bowel cancer is common on the Island and in most cases (9/10) is caused by polyps in the bowel. Bowel polyps are small growths on the inner lining of the large intestine (colon) or rectum. Bowel polyps are very common, and affect around 1 in 4 people aged 50 or over.

The Health Services Directorate can detect polyps by testing your poo for blood using a simple test. When detected early, bowel cancer survival rates are very high (around 90%), so getting tested is very important.

Over the next year, the Health Services Directorate will be offering men and women aged 50-74 years one of these tests.

The tests can be done yourself and will then need to be returned to the Hospital. The Health Services Directorate will be calling groups of people in age order and will publish a public announcement when the test kits for your age group are ready to be picked up. The pack with the test in has full instructions about how to do the test.

To begin with, from 1 February 2023, the Health Services Directorate will be encouraging those who were born in 1948 to pick up a test from the Hospital reception which is open from 8am to 9pm, seven days per week. Once you have completed your test you can drop it back into the box at reception.

Results will be provided with four weeks, and you may be called in to speak to a doctor about these if necessary.

If you have any questions about this campaign please call: 25888. Alternatively please speak to your GP.

The Health Services Directorate will issue a public announcement when tests are available for those born in years subsequent to 1948.

  • Recognition and farewell event for the MV Helena

On Saturday, 28 January 2023, a recognition event is being held at Rupert’s Jetty between 12 noon and 3pm. Members of the public are invited to attend so that they may extend thanks for the service provided by the MV Helena over the last four years, and to bid farewell to the Captain and crew.

The MV Helena crew served the Island throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, with members of their crew often staying on-board for many months at a time.

There will be a short ceremony at 2.30pm.

Following the event, and in view of the MV Helena being in port for cargo operations, the Jetty will once again be closed to the public from 3pm onwards.

Please be advised that whilst all health and safety precautions will be taken, the Jetty is an operational area. As such you are advised to take care when moving about and to ensure that children are supervised at all times.

Rupert’s beach and bay will remain closed to swimming and any other leisure activities throughout.

No cars will be allowed past the barricade without prior permission from Port Control, however, parking will be permitted at the back of the Sea Rescue Facility and near the beach. You are asked to please refrain from parking in front of the Sea Rescue Facility as this area must remain clear at all times.

If organisation would like to support or be involved in the event, please contact Mia Henry by email: mia.henry@sainthelena.gov.sh or by tel: 25970.

  • Waste Management Services Update

    Waste Management Services Update

Waste Management Services (WMS) would like to inform the public that there are end of life tyres at Horse Point Landfill Site (HPLS) Bulky Waste Cell which are available for the public for upcycling projects.

The tyres have been made available to the public thanks to a joint project between SHG and the Ascension Island Government (AIG). Special thanks again goes to AIG’s Waste Management Team for the tyres and to AW Ship Management Limited for providing reduced shipping costs which enabled this joint working between the islands.

HPLS is open 24 hours a day and seven days a week. However, the public are encouraged to visit HPLS during daylight hours only, unless they are equipped with adequate lighting to ensure they can navigate the site safely.

WMS would also like to take this opportunity to remind the public that the Public Recycling Facility is also available to dispose of waste. This is in addition to the Bulky Waste Cell and gives others the opportunity to salvage and reuse some of these waste streams. This can include items such as glass, cans, scrap metal, wood, white goods and small electrical appliances, textiles and clothing, and furniture.

The public are further reminded that only domestic waste should be placed in wheelie bins for disposal in the Refuse Collection Vehicles (RCV). Waste such as garden waste, construction waste, electrical appliances, scrap metal, vehicle batteries, oil, lubricants and paints, and agriculture chemicals should not be disposed of alongside domestic waste. These products can cause damage to the RCV’s which could render them unusable. WMS reserves the right not to empty a wheelie bin if it contains unacceptable and or hazardous waste.

When visiting HPLS, different Waste Cells for correct and safe disposal are signposted, but the WMS team can advise where these are if needed. HPLS is staffed during normal working hours of Monday to Friday between 8.30am and 4pm.

For more information on HPLS Operations including recycling, please contact Patrick Crowie, Landfill Manager, on telephone: 23655 or email: landfill.manager@helanta.co.sh.

The following is a Public Announcement from the Royal Saint Helena Police:

The public are advised thata temporary one way system will be in place tomorrow, Thursday 12 January, from 10am to 5pm.

The one way system will be clearly signed and will be removed as soon as no longer required.

The one way system has been put in place in order to more safely manage traffic and ease congestion, given the anticipated increase in vehicle volumes due to the visit of the MV Seven Seas Voyager cruise ship. This is the same process as has been put in place in previous years and is likely to also be a feature during future cruise ship visits.

We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank the public for their understanding in this matter.
