  • Repeat Prescriptions to be filled prior to Friday, 9 December 2022

The Health Services Directorate would like to inform the public that, due to staff movements, the Pharmacy will have reduced opening hours during the festive period.  The opening hours for the pharmacy and all other services offered within the Health and Social Care Portfolio over the festive period will be communicated shortly.

To help manage staff workload, the Pharmacy would like to avoid having large quantities of repeat prescriptions to process during the weeks leading up to the festive period.  This is to avoid service delays within the pharmacy and to other health care facilities. Therefore staff would like to ask members of the public who will require their repeat prescription order to be filled for the festive period, to please forward their requests to be processed prior to Friday, 9 December 2022.

The public is reminded that all requests for repeat prescriptions are required five working days in advance of collection, and that there may be slight delays due to high demand during this time of year.  For repeat requests the Pharmacy can be contacted via tel: 25867 or the pharmacy ordering email address: pharmacy.prescriptions@shg.gov.sh.

Repeat prescriptions will be processed on weekdays only

The Health Services Directorate would like to thank the public for their cooperation.

  • Continued Leak from RFA Darkdale

Port Control would like to advise the public that oil from RFA Darkdale has today been observed coming into James Bay. The wreck of the Second World War era vessel is occasionally observed to leak some of the oil residue that remains in the wreck, and due to today’s sea and wind conditions small amounts of this is currently washing toward the shore.

Through dynamic risk assessment, the implications of the current leak, and what mitigating actions can be taken to address the issue, are being assessed. This will allow authorities to understand what the potential impacts might be, and what, if anything, is needed to address these.

Whilst monitoring and assessment continue, the public is advised that with immediate affect James Bay and Rupert’s Bay will be closed to all recreational swimming and scuba diving.

It is also advisable for fishermen to avoid fishing in these areas until further notice.

In monitoring the situation, the public will be advised if it is deemed necessary to take any further action. However, it is likely that with a change in wind and current direction over the coming days the residue will drift offshore.

The public is thanked in advance for their patience and co-operation. Further information will be provided on this matter shortly.

    Notes to Editor:

A Ministry of Defence (MOD) project to remove oil from the wreck of the RFA Darkdale was completed in August 2015. All oil that could be pumped from the wreck was removed during the project. It was noted that small amounts of residue were left and as the wreck continues to rust away over the coming years, further small leaks of oil are inevitable.

  • Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening available for men aged 65+ years

The Health and Social Care Portfolio would like to inform all men aged 65 years and over that Health Services will be offering screening for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (AAA) commencing from November 2022.

AAA screening is a way of checking if there’s a bulge or swelling in the aorta. The aorta is the main blood vessel that runs from your heart down through your abdomen (stomach). This bulge or swelling is called an abdominal aortic aneurysm, or AAA which can be serious if not spotted early on because it could get bigger and eventually burst (rupture).

Screening for AAA is normally offered to men during the year they turn 65, as men aged 65 or over are most at risk of getting AAAs. Screening can help diagnose AAA early on and catch it at a time when it can usually be treated.

Persons who are not usually offered AAA screening:

    • Women
    • Men under 65
    • People who have already been treated for an AAA

The reason those listed above are not offered screening is because the risk of getting an AAA is much smaller in these groups.

Why it is beneficial to be screened for AAA?

An AAA will often cause few or no obvious symptoms, but if it’s left untreated it could become bigger, ultimately meaning it could burst and cause life-threatening internal bleeding. This is very serious. Of those that suffer an AAA burst, about 8 in every 10 people do not survive either the initial burst or the resulting emergency surgery to try to repair it.

Screening can pick up an AAA before it bursts. If an AAA is found, you can choose to have regular scans to monitor it or planned surgery to stop it bursting.

What happens during an AAA screening?

The screening test is a very quick and painless ultrasound scan of your abdomen, similar to the scan carried out on pregnant women.

The whole test usually takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Sometimes the technician might not be able to see your aorta clearly. This is not anything to worry about if this happens, you’ll be asked to have another scan, usually on a different day.

How will you receive the results of your AAA screening?

Persons will be given their result at the end of the test. If a problem is found, a letter will be sent to the persons confirming the result and letting them know what would be the next steps for them.

What do you need to do?

Eligible persons are advised that they do not need to contact the hospital themselves. When it is their turn to be screened, the Health Service will be in contact to offer or arrange an appointment.

Staff will be starting with those persons who were born in in the year 1957 and then move backwards to those born in 1956, then 1955, etc.

From January 2023 Health Services will also be offering scans to those who reach their 65th birthday in 2023 (i.e. those born in 1958).

  • Remembrance Sunday Divine Service

    Remembrance Sunday Divine Service

The annual Remembrance Sunday Divine Service, in honour of those who lost their lives in the violence of war, as well as those who served and survived these wars, was held at the Cenotaph in Jamestown on Sunday, 13 November 2022.

The Right Reverend Lord Bishop of St Helena, Dale Bowers welcomed those in attendance which included His Excellency the Governor and Mrs Phillips, the Honourable Speaker, Honourable Chief Minister and the Chief Secretary, Ex-Servicemen and Women, persons who served on the RMS St Helena during the 1982 Falklands War and the St Helena Veterans Association (SHVA).

Following the scripture readings the Governor and Stefan Thomas, President of the Prince Andrew School Student Council,  then gave the act of Remembrance before a two-minute silence was observed. The silence was signalled by the Last Post, played by members of the First Jamestown Scout Group.

During the course of the service, prayers were led by Pastor Paul Taylor, Pastor Reuben Oliphant, Pastor Anthony Hopkins, Fr Ronnie Alexander, Envoy Coral Yon, Fr David Musgrave, Fr Ernest Fritz, Deacon Edgar Crowie and Rector Darren Peters.

A wreath was laid for St Helena, Ascension and Tristian Da Cunha by Governor Phillips with other wreaths being laid for the President of the French Republic, the Government of St Helena, the Royal Navy, the Army, the Royal Air Force, the Merchant Navy, the St Helena Police Force, the St Helena Fire and Sea Rescue Services and the SHVA. Members of the public and school children also laid wreaths.

A wreath was also laid by divers in the harbour, in commemoration of those who lost their lives on board the RFA Darkdale.

The national anthem was sung and the service was concluded with a blessing from Bishop Dale.

The Island’s servicemen and women then proceeded with the march-past parade outside the Court House.

Alongside the service on-Island, St Helena Government’s UK Representative, Mrs Kedell Worboys MBE, attended the UK’s Ceremony of Remembrance at the Cenotaph in London and laid a wreath on behalf of St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha.

    Kedell said:

“It was an honour to lay the wreath this year on behalf of the Governments and people of St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. It is a fitting tribute to the islanders who has served with the Armed Forces in conflicts around the world.”

  • Road Closure

Due to the delayed arrival of the MV Helena, construction of the remaining nine (of a total of 40) concrete road panels on Side Path has had to be reprogrammed. This is because the Contractor is awaiting the required materials and regrettably these cannot be sourced on-Island.

From Monday 14 November 2022 the Contractor will instead be undertaking works to the historic wall. This is also part of the Side Path Road (R2) Project, but had been scheduled to take place after construction of the concrete road panels had been completed. This reprogramming is the best way to mitigate the shipping delays and ensure that Side Path road can be reopened before Christmas.

In order to allow these works to take place safely, the Highway Authority has given permission for the section of Napoleon Street above the laundrette, the Brow, and Seales Corner Road up to Carnarvon Court entrance, to be closed from Monday 14 November 2022 to Friday 02 December 2022.

During this closure, only emergency services will be granted vehicular access.  Pedestrians will be allowed access, but are asked to be mindful of their surrounding and vigilant of work underway in this area. Appropriate signage will be in place.

Other road users are asked to use the access from the Market Street entrance through Seales Corner.

For any queries, Site Supervisor – Mr Chris Williams can be contacted on mobile no. 67424 or the Contractor – Mr John Isaac on mobile no. 62466.

The public are thanked in advance for their understanding and cooperation.
