  • Registering for Flu and COVID-19 vaccinations

The Health Service would like to inform the public of the following:

First and second primary doses, and a first booster dose, of the COVID-19 vaccine are available for any eligible persons who have not yet received these.  Persons who have tested positive for COVID-19 can still receive a first or second primary dose and/or a first boosterbut this can only be administered eight weeks after you initially tested positive.   The primary doses are available for persons aged 12 years and above, the first booster dose is available to persons aged 18 years and above.

The public are reminded that, thanks to funding from the UK Government through the FCDO, the Health Services plan to continue the COVID-19 vaccination programme in March 2023 with the latest bivalent COVID-19 vaccine.  This particular type of vaccine is effective specifically against the Omicron variant, as well as older variants of COVID-19.  Further details regarding this will be issued nearer the time.

Flu vaccinations are also available to any interested persons aged 18 years and above.

Any persons who would like to receive a flu vaccination, or the COVID-19 vaccine doses as mentioned above, should register their names with the Receptionist at the General Hospital via telephone number 22500 by 3pm on Wednesday, 16, November 2022. Interested persons are asked to give their full name and date of birth.

Dependent on demand, vaccination clinics will be arranged and announced thereafter. If there is limited demand then persons will be contacted directly by the responsible nurse, who will arrange for them to receive their vaccinations at their nearest clinic.

  • Changes introduced to repeat prescription orders and charges

The Health and Social Care Portfolio would like to inform the public that the Pharmacy will now be dispensing repeat prescription drugs in batches of three month supplies. This is being done to reduce the number of persons visiting the Pharmacy for repeat prescriptions. It is anticipated that with a three month supply given to patients each time, this will reduce the daily demand on the pharmacy service. This will then allow a more efficient and effective service to be provided to persons requiring immediate prescriptions, as well as other services provided by the Pharmacy, such as to the General Hospital and Social Care Facilities.

The Pharmacy will also revert back to charging the normal full price of £2.60 for each prescription. Since August, the Pharmacy trialled dispensing two months’ worth of supplies to patients whilst charging for one month’s supply only. This was done during the Island’s COVID-19 transition period following the removal of quarantine. This was also designed to reduce the number of people within the Pharmacy so as to reduce the potential spread of COVID-19, ensuring that the Pharmacy’s essential services could be continued throughout this period.

The public is reminded that all requests for repeat prescriptions are required five working days in advance of collection, and that these will be processed on weekdays only. For repeat requests the Pharmacy can be contacted via tel: 22500 or the pharmacy ordering email address: pharmacy.prescriptions@shg.gov.sh

  • Lifting of Covid-19 requirements within Health & Social Care Portfolio

The Health & Social Care Portfolio would like to inform the public that with immediate effect COVID-19 procedures previously in place within the Social Care facilities (the Community Care Complex, Ebony View, Cape Villa and Deason’s) will no longer be required.

All procedures will be kept under review in case there should be a need to reinstate them again in the future, such as if there is an observed and significant increase in COVID-19 cases on-Island.

This means that the following protocols should now be observed.

    Social Care Facilities:

    • Testing for staff and visitors to the social care facilities (Community Care Complex, Deason’s, Cape Villa and Ebony View) will no longer be required.
    • Visitors are advised that if they are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 they should consider self-testing prior to arriving to the care facilities. Alternatively, testing facilities will be available at the care setting.

Face masks will not be a requirement at any of the facilities until further notice. However, it is an individual’s choice if they would like to continue to wear face masks.

The public are reminded of the following COVID-19 services available from the Health & Social Care Portfolio that will continue until further notice.

    COVID-19 Helpline:

    • The COVID-19 Helpline will be available via tel: 25888 between 8am and 4pm on weekdays only.
    • Persons who test positive are asked to call in their result via the COVID-19 Helpline in order for their health record to be updated.

    Testing:

    • COVID-19 tests for self-testing can be collected from Reception at the General Hospital
    • Testing for the general public is currently still available at the Bradleys Facility by prior arrangement, via the COVID-19 Helpline on tel: 25888

    Vaccination Programme:

    • The COVID-19 vaccination programme will resume in March 2023 when further vaccinations will be offered to the public.

The Health Service is currently offering flu vaccinations to persons who would like to receive this. To arrange a flu vaccination, please get in touch via tel: 22500 to register your name.

The public are advised to continue to practise good hand and respiratory hygiene during their daily routines. Globally it has been recognised that even with the continuous development of vaccination programmes, COVID-19 has not yet been completely eradicated and will therefore continue to circulate for years to come.

  • COVID-19 Statistics for St Helena, Friday, 14 – Thursday, 20 October 2022

The St Helena Health Services Directorate would like to inform the public that 12 positive cases of COVID-19 were identified/reported within the community during the period Friday 14 to Thursday 20 October 2022.

A total of 1794 positive cases have been identified since the lifting of quarantine on Monday 8 August 2022.

If you have recently self-tested and were or are currently positive with COVID-19, you are asked to please call the COVID Helpline via telephone number 25888, to report your result, if you haven’t already done so. This is so that the population’s COVID-19 statistics as well as your health record, can be updated. You will therefore be asked for your name, date of birth, and the date you tested positive.

Whilst members of the public are asked to continue reporting positive test results to ensure that authorities have the most accurate picture possible, statistics show that the number of positive COVID-19 cases continues to fall from the peak observed in mid-September.

As such, it is considered that the island has moved through the transition phase following the removal of quarantine and has now entered, and will remain in, the phase of “Living with COVID”.  The public are nonetheless advised to continue to practise good hand and respiratory hygiene, with further information to be provided shortly about what this means for the island, and any actions that individuals may want to continue to observe.
